Outdoor Christmas Decoration
Wondering where to start you outdoor Christmas decoration?
Look no further! We’ve got a lot of great ideas for this years outdoor Christmas decorating.
Remember that movie, “Deck the Halls”, where Danny Devito and Matthew Broderick battle it out over their outdoor Christmas decoration? I laugh SO hard at that one. Bringing in a camel to his nativity scene – genius! Funny funny funny. Of course, it’s not so funny when my wife calls me “Buddy”, Devito’s character. Hey! I DO like my outdoor Christmas decoration because it’s the one time of year I can get away with playing like a kid outside.
I actually have NOT yet brought in a camel, but I do like the family of inflatable deer I have. I’m also big on lights, not the search light to the moon intensity of Devitos’ Buddy, but I try to get all the branches of the ash in my front yard covered. It really looks nice if you use the small white lights to follow each branch. I’ve tried to do shapes like using 1×2s as a wood frame for a sleigh with colored lights.
But part of the fun for me is shopping to see what else they have this year. Generally, I shoot for a theme with my outdoor Christmas decoration plans each year – I’ve had a nativity scene a few times, a snowman football game, Santa and his reindeer, different colored Christmas trees, a Charlie Brown Christmas. One year I got real artsy, and did a light show that sort of responded to the Christmas music I played. Yep, all outside. I have pretty tolerant neighbors.
If you’re interested in doing themes, here’s what I’ve learned. First, to keep costs down, try to figure out how you can use outdoor Christmas decoration pieces again. You probably will have to buy something new to make the scene “authentic”, but you can use stuff like hay, white lights, inflatable pumps, inflatable candy canes year in and year out.
Build what you can – another cost saving measure. But when you find something that really sets the scene off, spring for it. You won’t regret it.
